Description

Merton has won the Visitors' Cup for Coxless Fours at Henley Royal Regatta twice: in 1920 and 1956.
The 1920 crew comprised David Raikes (who coached the 1956 crew) Geoffrey Mure (Warden), Basil Blackwell and Stephen Potter (of Gamesmanship fame). The 1956 crew: John Shore, Tony Stearns, Brian Mawer and Robin Raikes - son of David Raikes. The larger group photo includes the 1956 crew, two of the 1920 crew, various MCBC members and the two lady owners of the cafe!

Interesting crew combination in 1920. If I'm correct, Basil Blackwell went down in 1912, and Geoffrey Mure in 1913. So presumably they didn't overlap with David Raikes and Stephen Potter. Just wondered how they put the four together. By the way, John, I'm pretty sure that the college was still using the same IV- that you used to win the Visitors' when they won the University IVs in the late 70s...

I thought I'd made a comment on this before, but possibly it didn't get through. Interesting that when Merton won in 1920, the crew (with the possible exception of David Raikes), were all Old Mertonians. Basil Blackwell I think had left Merton in 1912, having been there six years... Geoffrey Mure left in 1913 and fought in WWI. Stehpen Potter left in 1918
